One of Nelnet’s core values is to give back to the communities in which we live and work. With a long track record of giving back to our communities, Nelnet associates can take pride in belonging to an organization that constantly and genuinely embraces its core values.

A prime example of how Nelnet is dedicated to giving back can be found on many associates’ first day of employment. As part of “nGage: The Nelnet Experience,” a special program specifically for new hires, new associates take part in philanthropy projects, as a way to become familiarized with Nelnet’s history and culture. This has been ongoing since July 2017.

The idea behind this effort was to give new associates an opportunity to not only learn about our core value of giving back to the communities in which we live and work, but to also take part in it. In every in-classroom nGage session, 30 minutes are set aside to participate in a giving back activity. In 2018 alone, new associates spent 930 hours completing 186 philanthropy projects for a variety of organizations.

Our Director of Corporate Training and Organizational Development, Nycci Jones, has been at the forefront of the nGage experience and putting together these philanthropy projects. “We partner with multiple organizations in the different communities in which Nelnet operates along with United Way and Junior Achievement,” Nycci said. “We have put together food and hygiene kits, PB&J sack lunches, backpacks for LPS [Lincoln Public Schools], sent encouragement cards through Operation Gratitude to troops stationed overseas, put together folders for Girl Scouts, as well as made tie-fleece blankets for the children clients of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), to name a few.”

Nycci believes it goes a little bit further than just the philanthropy projects completed. “In nGage, we discuss all of our core values and their importance on how Nelnet operates through them,” Nycci said. “We want our new associates to walk out of nGage with the feeling they have made the right decision and know Nelnet is an organization that doesn’t just talk about core values — we live them.”
