“I literally cried.”
This was the reaction Nelnet Senior Campus Recruiter Jessica Schumacher had when her intern, Mary Woodruff, asked her to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Mortar Board’s “People Who Inspire” celebration as the person that inspires her. The annual event gives each member in the senior society an opportunity to recognize someone who has made an impact on their lives.
“Choosing Jessica to be my person who inspires was incredibly easy. Jessica is constantly showing me what it means to be a good boss, coworker, recruiter, mentor, mom, and friend,” Mary said. “Jess is selfless toward her team. She is always asking how we are doing and what we need to be successful.”
Even though most of the time she’s the one mentoring, Jessica says she often learns from Mary as well.
“Mary has really helped me step back and re-evaluate my processes and thinking,” Jessica said. “Above all, through conversations we have had about her life and growth, I have been constantly reminded that life is about taking risks, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and accepting that the unknown is sometimes where we truly find ourselves!”
Mary isn’t the only intern under Jessica’s wing. She supervises four other department interns and oversees Nelnet’s Pathway internship program.
Nelnet internships provide students with a unique opportunity to explore different parts that make a company like Nelnet operate. More importantly, they allow interns to learn from mentors like Jessica and keep growing professionally and personally.
“The most enjoyable aspect of my role is the ability to watch and assist in the professional and personal growth of the interns I work with,” Jessica said. “Their work ethic, methods of thinking, excitement, and eagerness to learn are palpable, and I truly believe that the ability to learn from and grow with them is beneficial to all members and areas of our business.”
