At this year’s 2018 TeamMates Gala, Nelnet sponsored two tables for associate mentors and their guests. This year’s featured guest speakers included current Nebraska football coach Scott Frost, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne, and Warren Buffett, who participated in a panel discussion for a crowd of nearly 1,600 people. The three discussed football, role models in their lives, and the influence the three have had on each other over the years. Frost starred at quarterback for Nebraska under Osborne from 1995-1997, winning a national championship in his senior season and Osborne’s final year as head coach.

TeamMates was founded in 1991 by Osborne and his wife Nancy. The original TeamMates program consisted of 22 Nebraska football players from the 1991 season. Recognizing the influence his players had, Coach Osborne partnered them up with 22 middle school students from Lincoln Public Schools (21 of whom went on to graduate from high school).

Once a week, TeamMates mentors meet with their mentee to help with homework, share common activities, or just to check in on one another.

TeamMates continues its important mission of one-on-one youth mentoring, third grade and up, by building positive relationships with students and helping them reach their full potential.

Many Nelnet associates have served or currently serve as TeamMates mentors. We are very proud of our associates for living out our core value of giving back to the community. If you’re interested in becoming a TeamMates mentor yourself, visit their website to learn more about the program.
