As Nelnet’s Campus Recruiter, Micah Lindblad champions Nelnet’s internship programs and early career recruiting. By traveling to career fairs across the Midwest, coordinating intern hiring, and enriching Nelnet’s internship programs, he helps Nelnet attract the talent of tomorrow. Micah is a key member of a team that represents Nelnet’s investment in its IT and Pathway internship programs.

Why did you want to work at Nelnet?

Looking back, what really attracted me to Nelnet was that they are a leader in the community. What I found out was they’re not only a leader in Lincoln, but in all the locations they’re a part of in the Midwest. Also, they place a large emphasis in their campus and internship programs, which certainly motivated me to become a part of the corporate recruiting team.

Describe your first week at work.

After our first-day orientation, I was able to dive straight into work by helping to interview and select interns for the summer. I loved fully joining the recruiting process and learning what opportunities we had available to students by engaging with hiring managers. I appreciated the trust my manager had in me on day one by allowing me to jump right into visiting with students.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

By far my favorite part of my job is getting to engage with students (both interns and potential new hires). Students always have so much energy and motivation to learn, so when we have a new project that affects our business directly, they’re always ready to jump in and start working.

What are you most excited for?

I’m most excited for our upcoming IT internships planned for the summer of 2020. Our leadership has placed a large company-wide emphasis on investing in IT talent, and reciprocating that through college recruiting and internships is very exciting. I can’t wait to see what the more than 35 new IT interns can contribute to our various business lines in the coming year.

Where is Nelnet going? How do you fit into that bigger picture?

It’s a very exciting time to be on the recruiting team. We’re placing a large emphasis not just on IT talent, but on various business and customer service positions across the board. Getting to see the new opportunities and roles at the organization is fascinating, and helping to bring them in energizes me day in and day out.

What makes you good at your job? What knowledge, skills, and habits do you utilize most?

My previous experience working as a Career Coach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln helps me immensely in my current role as a campus recruiter. I get to utilize my previous knowledge and relationships with students to position Nelnet as an organization that is not only flexible with students, but works to make sure they have the best possible experience. Understanding what kinds of projects and experiences students are motivated to pursue and communicating that effectively helps Nelnet overall.
