In early October, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Nebraska chapter held its annual AIA Nebraska Design Awards. These awards recognize architects in Nebraska who have fulfilled their commitment to excellence in design and livability in our communities.

This year, AIA Nebraska presented four Honor Awards and 13 Merit Awards, selected from 89 total submissions. Nelnet’s 401 Building was selected as the Excellence in Architectural Detail Merit Award winner.

The 401 Building was formerly a windowless, brick monolith that housed the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph office building. Upon purchasing the space, Nelnet and Speedway saw an opportunity to renovate the building into a functional and beautiful space, while marking a new architectural beginning for Lincoln’s Telegraph District.
